6. an-An'am
7. al-A'raf
8. al-'Anfal
9. at-Tawbah
10. Yunis
an-An’am means “cattle”. In this surah, Allah tells us about those who invented their own rules regarding the sacrifice and forbidance of crops and cattle. Allah reminds us that He is enough of a witness between the believers and those who go astray. Imagine an impeccably straight road, and a herd of 6 cattle blundering blindly away from that straight path in disobedience despite their headsman calling them back. Surah an-An’am is the 6th chapter of the Qur’an.
al-A’raf means “the Heights”. This surah describes to us the fall of Adam, and how he was deceived by Shaytan and expelled from Jannah. Imagine a man falling from the heights of Paradise, down through the 7 skies, and all the way down to the bottom of the earth. Surah al-A’raf is the 7th chapter of the Qur’an.
al-‘Anfal means “the Spoils of War”. In this surah, Allah tells us about the Battle of Badr in detail. It also reminds us of how the Quraish plotted to kill, imprison, or exile the Prophet (peace be upon him). Now, a little history lesson!
The tribe of Banu Quarish is divided into 9 major sub-clans:
1. Banu Abd-al-dar
2. Banu Makhzum (tribe of Khalid ibn al-Walid aka The Sword of Allah)
3. Banu Zuhra (clan of Sa’ad ibn Abi Waqqas, one of the 10 promised paradise)
4. Banu Taym (tribe of Abu Bakr)
5. Banu Adi (tribe of Umar ibn al—Khattab)
6. Banu Asad (tribe of Khadijah, the Prophet’s first wife)
7. Banu Jumah
8. Banu Sahm (clan of Amr ibn al-As)
9. Banu Abd Manaf (branched into 4 sub-tribes includling Banu Hashim, the tribe of the Prophet)
When the Quraish planned to kill the Prophet whilst he was still in Makkah, Shaytan appeared to them as a man and suggested that each tribe select one man and to attack the Prophet at once, so the tribe of the Prophet Muhammed would be unable to exact revenge against all the other tribes. Not including Banu Abd Manaf (the parent clan of the Prophet’s tribe) there are 8 other major Quarishi clans. Surah al-‘Anfal is the 8th chapter of the Qur’an.
at-Tawbah means “repentance”. This surah Allah tells us that He is forgiving and merciful to those who makes sincere tawbah (repentance). He also reminds of those who took their scholars, monks, and the Prophet Isa as lords besides Allah, although they were not commanded to worship but One God. We've all heard the saying “A cat has 9 lives,” so imagine a cat making tawbah (repentance) for each of his nine lives. Surah at-Tawbah is the 9th chapter of the Qur’an.
Yunis is the Prophet Jonah (peace be upon him). In this surah Allah advises the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) regarding the disbelievers, and relates the stories of Prophet Nuh (alayhi selam) and Prophet Musa (alayhi selam) – and how they called to belief yet many disbelieved. Allah says the only community who all believed so their faith saved them was the people of Prophet Yunis (peace be upon him). It was Prophet Yunis who was swallowed by the whale after being cast into the sea, imagine 10 huge whales each rushing through the waters to swallow him first. Surah Yunis is the 10th chapter of the Qur’an.
