Let's memorize the names of the first 5 Suras of the Qur'an!
1. al-Fatiha
2. al-Baqarah
3. ali-Imran
4. an-Nisa'
5. al-Ma'eda
It is hard to memorize when information is not connected to something meaningful, so lets start connecting! Ready???
al-Fatiha means "open". It is the opening chapter of the Qur'an. Close your eyes and imagine yourself opening the door just one time. Al-Fatiha is the first Surah of the Qur'an.
Al-Baqahrah means "cow". This Surah reminds the Children of Israel of Allah's favor upon them, yet how they were disobedient and disbelieved, and worshiped a golden cow. Imagine not one, but two golden cows being worshiped as an idol by crowds of people. Surah al-Baqarah is the 2nd Surah of the Qur'an.
ali-Imran means "the family of Imran". Imran is the father of Maryam, mother of Jesus. He dedicated his daughter to the service of the Lord before she was even born. Imagine the 3 generations of the Imran family, Father Imran, daughter Maryam, and baby Isa (peace be upon them all). ali-Imran is the 3rd chapter of the Qur'an.
an-Nisa' means 'women". This chapter deals with the rulings on marriage and hijab. Imagine 4 friendly, good-natured women sitting together drinking coffee and knitting. Surah an-Nisa' is the 4th chapter of the Qur'an.
al-Ma'eda means "table". This Surah tells us about the table of food that Allah sent down to the apostles as a sign. Imagine a table with not 4 legs, but 5 -- four at each corner and one in the center. Surah al-Ma'eda is the 5th chapter of the Qur'an.
The better you visualize, the better you memorize! Don't be afraid, go for it!
